Driving Routes – The best way to visit Ireland

There are few parts of the world that can offer quite so much when it comes to driving tours as Ireland can.

Touring the Emerald Isle by a rental car is so popular, designated driving routes by Failte Ireland have popped up all over to help visitors make the most of their time and get the full experience of whichever location they happen to be exploring. In Co. Galway, there’s a seaside town called Clifden that offers access to the Sky Road, an eleven-kilometre circular route over the nearby cliffs that provides amazing views of the stunning Connemara region, Clifden Bay, and its islands out to sea. Pick up Car Rental Dublin to start exploring.

Slightly longer then the Sky Road is the famous Ring of Kerry. This 180 kilometre looped route winds past fabulous beaches, mirror-like lakes, medieval ruins, along vast green fields, and up and down rocky mountains. Inside the Ring of Kerry is the less well known Skellig Ring, an 18-kilometre route that links Waterville and Portmagee via a rarely visited area teeming with ancient monastic structures and diverse wildlife.

Another well-known route is the beautiful Boyne Valley, a region of crisscrossed roads set against vibrant green scenery that holds more ancient, historical and mythical wonders than you thought possible. These range from the old, such as the site of the notorious Battle of the Boyne, to the very old, like Trim Castle, to the ancient, such as the legendary Hill of Tara, to the prehistoric, like the 5000-year old tombs of Newgrange and Knowth, and so much more besides.

Ireland’s Ancient East

Ireland’s Ancient East tour has no prescribed route but is divided into three distinct zones that, together, stretch from the southern border of Northern Ireland, right down the central and eastern regions to just west of Cork, covering seventeen counties and over 5000 years of history.

The Land of 5000 Dawns concentrates on the long history of central Ireland, including the famous Boyne Valley, and delves deeply into the myths, legends and prehistoric findings that single Ireland out as a land of magic and mystery.

The Historic Heartlands focuses on the land’s medieval times, with tours and suggested routes that take visitors to some of the greatest heritage sites and the grandest houses and castles that were built during the turbulent times of war and invasion.

The Celtic Coast looks at the southern and eastern shores of Ireland from when they were pillaged and raided by Vikings, to when the invaders actually settled there and built prosperous towns which survive to this day.

The Wild Atlantic Way

The Wild Atlantic Way is Ireland’s number one touring route. It’s the longest coastal driving route in the world, running an astonishing 2500 kilometres down along the Emerald Isle’s awe-inspiring Atlantic coast, and featuring 157 discovery points, over 1000 attractions, and more than 3500 activities. Book your Car Hire Dublin Airport today.

A suggested route that follows the winding and clifftop roads from Malin Head in Co. Donegal right down to Kinsale in Co. Cork, visiting in every breath-taking sight and humbling view along the way. Of course, the Wild Atlantic Way can be covered in a matter of days, but that misses the experience of stopping and appreciating the surroundings as you visit them.

Following the route, you could leave vibrant Cork, known as the real capital of Ireland, behind and travel the Ring of Kerry, stay the night in Kenmare, then head across the otherworldly landscape of the Burren before arriving at the legendary Cliffs of Moher.

Alternatively, why not watch the northern lights from the remote and mysterious Tory Island before heading back to the mainland, enjoying a pint of Guinness in Ireland’s most northerly pub, watching the waves swell and break 600 metres below the Slieve League cliffs, having a late seafood lunch in Sligo, then heading to a folk music festival in lively Galway city.

Optional Services & Products

When you book a rental car with Irish Car Rentals, there are a number of additional products and services on offer, these include options such as additional drivers, child safety seats, Global Positioning System GPS and cancellation cover. These optional services are in place to further your car hire experience and make your Irish adventure as convenient as possible.
